Hollywood actor Brian Cox has claimed Meghan Markle 'had ambition' to join the Royal Family before she even met Prince Harry.
The Braveheart star said Meghan 'knew what she was getting into' when she married Harry in a televised ceremony at Windsor Castle in 2018.
In an interview with Haute Living magazine, the 76-year-old – most recently seen in Emmy-winning show Succession – also accused the Duchess of Sussex of being fully aware of the ‘system’ she had entered into.
Addressing the subsequent fallout with the monarchy, Brian said Meghan shouldn’t have expected Harry to just ‘cut himself off’.
The couple are still known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Harry is still a Prince. However, they have stepped down as senior royals and relinquished their HRH titles.
“You can’t go into a system where somebody’s already been trained to behave in a certain kind of way and then just expect them to cut themselves off,” Brian told the US publication.
The Scottish actor continued: “I mean, she knew what she was getting into.”
Hinting Meghan isn’t as naive as she claimed to be when marrying into royalty, Brian said she clearly had an ‘ambition’ when she wed Harry that may have been a lifelong dream.
“The childhood dreams of marrying Prince Charming and all that s*** we see as fantasy that could be our lives in our dreams,” he argued.
Despite criticising Meghan for disrupting the Royal Family, Brian is anti-monarchy and thinks it should be abolished now the Queen has died.
“In my opinion, we shouldn’t have a monarchy. It’s not viable. It doesn’t make any sense.. f*** it, move on.”
The Mirror has reached out to Brian and Harry and Meghan’s reps for further comment.
During their engagement interview with the BBC, Meghan claimed she barely knew who Prince Harry was before she met him – blaming it on the fact she is American.
"Because I'm from the States, you don't grow up with the same understanding of the royal family. And so while I now understand very clearly there's a global interest there, I didn't know much about him," she claimed.
She was later accused of pursuing the red-haired royal in order to become a British princess.
However, the pair claim they were introduced by mutual friends after spotting each other’s pictures on Instagram back in 2016.
It seemed like Meghan and Harry were living the real-life fairytale until the couple announced they were stepping down from royal duties in January 2020.
The couple – who share son Archie, who turns four in May, and one-year-old Lilibet – have since moved back to the US, where Meghan is from.
Rumours have swirled Prince Harry will attend the coronatio n of his father, King Charles, alone on May 6.
This follows the death of his beloved grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, last September at the age of 96.
