Meghan Markle forced to update Instagram post confirming she was dating Prince Harry

When Prince Harry started dating Meghan Markle, he stressed the importance of keeping their blossoming love under wraps. Having grown up in The Firm, he knew all too well how bright the royal spotlight can be, and wanted to protect the American actress as much as he could.

So Meghan kept their first dates quiet, telling only a handful of her closest friends, and resisted posting snaps of their romantic outings and holiday on her popular Instagram page.

But that didn't stop her sharing a couple of not-so-subtle memes hinting there was a new man in her life, to the delight of her loyal fan base.

There were snaps of her wearing a bracelet matching one Harry regularly wore at the time, but the one that caught most people's attention was a snap of two bananas cuddling.

However Meghan, who was living in Canada at the time while Harry called Kensington Palace home, altered the cute post shortly after posting it after comments from fans.

She initially captioned the photo: "Sleep tight xx" with a banana and a thumbs up emoji.

Soon after posting the snap, her followers found out who created the image and shared the account with her - asking her to credit them.

She added another line to the caption, reading: "Update: Thanks so much to those who share the photo cred :) I didn't know, and I love it! Credit where credit is due: I'm bananas for this."

She then added a credit to @percxption, which is run by artist Tayna Spee. Her account bio reads: "Minimalism is not the lack of something"

Tayna initially posted on Valentine's Day in 2014 and it received 3,899 likes.

After the photo went viral thanks to Meghan, she updated the caption to thank those who had reposted it, including her new famous follower.

Fans loved the snap, with one writing in the comment section: "This is adorable."

Another joked: "Your banana will henceforth be called The Royal Banana."

Meghan and Harry officially confirmed their engagement in November 2017 via a statement from King Charles, issued through Buckingham Palace.

It read: "His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle are engaged to be married.

"His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle.

"The wedding will take place in Spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.

"His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle's parents.

"The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace."

They tied the knot in May 2018, with thousands of people lining the streets of Windsor to celebrate their marriage while millions watched on TV around the world.
