Meghan Markle has broken her silence on the new Netflix series that will focus on her life with Prince Harry - and teased what viewers can expect to see on-screen. The couple have a multi-million dollar deal with the streaming giant and have been filming for their new docuseries, but until now we have not received word from Meghan or Harry themselves.
Reports earlier this week had suggested that the series may be delayed until next year after Netflix received a backlash over the upcoming season of The Crown, which is set to feature several controversial storylines regarding the Royal Family in the early 1990s. In a new interview with Variety Magazine, Meghan explained it involved 'trusting' director Liz Garbus with their story and accepting that things might be done differently to how they would do it.
"It's nice to be able to trust someone with our story — a seasoned director whose work I've long admired — even if it means it may not be the way we would have told it," Meghan said in the chat.
"But that's not why we're telling it. We're trusting our story to someone else, and that means it will go through their lens."
Meghan obviously has previous experience in the industry, having found fame as a star of Suits, but it was a big shift for Prince Harry.
"It's interesting. My husband has never worked in this industry before," she explained.
"For me, having worked on 'Suits', it's so amazing to be around so much creative energy and to see how people work together and share their own points of view. That’s been really fun."
It may be a strange experience for Meghan, who is used to playing other people but will now have another actor cast as her.
"I haven’t given that much thought, to be honest. It's all weird. You have to compartmentalize," she confessed.
"Anyone talking about me or casting an actor to play me, that will be a caricature of me that has been created for a business that makes people a lot of money.
"Once you can separate that out, it’s much easier to go: ‘OK. That actually has nothing to do with me.’ It genuinely doesn’t. It’s a hard lesson to come to grips with."
Meghan also gave some advice to any actor who will be playing her - and said they can give her a ring to discuss the role.
She added: "I hope that in preparing for that role, she finds the softness and the playfulness and the laughter. The silliness. I just hope she finds the dimensions. Also, she can call me!"
Meghan also announced she will not be going back into acting, saying: "No. I’m done. I guess never say never, but my intention is to absolutely not."
The docuseries, which tells the "love story" of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, reportedly left some producers "confused during filming".
One industry insider said the couple were making "contradicting" statements when compared to the contents of Harry's book, Page Six reports.
The memoir, yet to be given an official release date after the Queen's death, has been the source of much speculation in recent months, with Palace aides reportedly nervous about it.
A Netflix source said: "A lot in the show contradicted what Harry has written, so that was an issue.
"Then Harry and Meghan made significant requests to walk back content they themselves have provided, for their own project."
Respected US website Deadline has said the expected December airing of the couple’s documentary has been pushed back into next year.
"They're rattled at Netflix, and they blinked first and decided to postpone the documentary," a source told the outlet.
But Netflix told the Deadline that "there's never been any documentary from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed".
The Duke and Duchess docuseries did not have an official release date initially, but multiple sources said it was to drop before Christmas - about a month after the premiere of the fifth season of The Crown.
