Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were dealt another career blow on Wednesday after their Netflix documentary failed to make the shortlist for a Primetime Emmy Award.
There had been speculation that the pair would make the honours list for September's ceremony but their docuseries sadly didn't make the cut. Shows eligible for the Primetime Emmys must have been broadcast in America between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023. Meghan and Harry's docuseries, which is titled Meghan & Harry, dropped onto Netflix around the globe on December 8, 2022.
There were thoughts it would be recognised after the series had been also been nominated for the best streaming non-fiction series at the Hollywood Critics Awards (HCA).
The Primetime Emmy snub comes around a month after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex parted ways with Spotify after just one series of their highly anticipated podcast.
And now, a PR expert has warned the pair the must "work harder" if they are to make a success of their media careers.
Jane Owen, the owner of Hollywood-based company Jane Owen Public Relations Inc, explained how the lack of recognition shows it is "harder to impress than maybe some would believe" in the entertainment industry.
Jane told Mirror US: "I think that the fact that it wasn’t even nominated shows that the Emmys look at more than just press hits. If they want to be taken seriously they need to work harder in general and they need to start working on projects that are more than just another story about themselves and something more complex than a 'pop documentary series'."
She continued: "They [Harry and Meghan] can’t just expect awards and adulation if they won’t put in more than the minimum amount of effort. They need to find more projects outside of themselves that they are passionate about and that they will back up with personal responsibility - stories outside of themselves - they can take a leaf out of Obamas book who is producing content that rarely has anything to do with himself.
"They also need to work at winning back public opinion by not complaining so much and showing that they can be worth the enormously massive deal they got from Netflix."
Prince Harry is currently said to be lining up a solo return to Africa for a new Netflix documentary. The duo are also said to be exploring more opportunities and this isn't expected to changed after their latest snub.
