The third biggest lottery prize of all time worth $1.34 billion - equivalent to £1.1billion - has been claimed two months after the draw.
In the US winners are able to choose to take the full sum, but broken down into yearly payments for the next 29 years, or take one lump payment which is much less, due to federal and state taxes.
The Mega Millions winners had just 60 days to choose between the cash and annuity options and up to a year to claim the prize.
On Wednesday the pair, who have decided to remain anonymous, came forward after agreeing even before they bought their tickets to split the winnings between them.
The two winners have spent the past few weeks working with professional legal and financial advisors, something lottery officials recommend winners do before coming forward to claim their prize.
They chose to take a lump sum payment of $780m - about £698M - each.
Illinois Lottery Claims Manager Luis Rodriguez said: "I’ve been working for the Illinois Lottery for over five years and this is by far the largest prize I’ve ever had to process
"When we met with the winners’ lawyers there was a real buzz of excitement in the room."
He added: "It’s a surreal feeling giving away this amount of money and knowing what a huge impact this is going to make on the winners’ lives, and for others close to them as well.
"It was an incredible feeling just to be part of that process – so I can only imagine how the winners themselves are feeling."
No information on the winners was given, other than that they bought their ticket at a Speedway gas station and convenience store in the Des Plaines suburb of Chicago, Illinois, and the draw was on July 29.
But Mr Rodriguez added they must be "over the moon."
The winning numbers that bagged the cash were 13, 36, 45, 57, 67, and the Mega Ball was 14.
The reason for the massive jackpotwas that no-one had matched the six key numbers drawn since April 15 this year.
The jackpot had rolled over 29 times without a winner.
It is now at an estimated $301M, as no-one has one again since the lucky pair.
In July, the UK's biggest ever lottery winner took home £195m after scooping the Euromillions jackpot.
This marked the the third £100M-plus EuroMillions jackpot won in the UK this year.
The £109M jackpot from the draw on 4 February was claimed a few days after, with the ticket-holder choosing to remain anonymous, and Joe and Jess Thwaite celebrated their £184M win from the draw on 10 May.
