A huge flagship branch of bakery chain Greggs is to open in the heart of the West End on Leicester Square.

Work has already started on the “Mega-Greggs” at a location better known for glitzy red carpet movie premieres attended by A-list celebrities.

Hoarding surrounding the site at 1 Leicester Square show a signature Steak Bake emerging from a giant Greggs savoury bag.

The Newcastle-based chain, known for its range of meat and vegan sausage rolls, pasties and sandwiches, joins global brands including M&M World, LEGO, and W Hotels on one of London’s most famous addresses.

Confirmation of the opening provoked an instant reaction on social media. One Twitter user said: “The North is officially taking over London – we truly love to see it,” while on Instagram @eatingwithtod said: “Attention Londoners, it looks like [Greggs] have something tasty cookin’ at Leicester Square.”

No opening date has been confirmed but it follows recent Greggs launches on The Strand, Canary Wharf, Paddington, St Pancras Station and Kings Cross. Across the UK, around 150 new Greggs shops are set to open over the next year, taking the total to just under 2,500.

Greggs said that as well as its regular range “the shop will offer local delicacies such as London Cheesecake and Tottenham Cake.”

A spokesperson for Greggs added: “The opening of our new flagship shop in Leicester Square will be a huge moment as we continue to expand our presence across prime locations in Central London.

“We’re excited to premiere our delicious food to new customers, including many tourists from outside of the UK who will get the opportunity to experience Greggs for the first time.”
