With the 2021 Tokyo Olympics less than a month away, we take a look at the Irish athletes that will be flying the flag for Ireland in Japan.
Team Ireland is set to be the biggest Irish team ever to travel to the Olympics with representatives in a record number of sports.
Here is the full list of Irish athletes competing in the 2021 Olympics:
Divers
For the first time in history, and Irish female diver will be competing in the Olympics, following the qualification of Tanya Watson in the Women’s 10m Platform.
Ollie Dingley will also be competing in his second Games in the Men’s 3m Springboard event.
Golf
Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry will represent Ireland in the Men’s Individual Stroke Play.
Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow will both compete in their second games.
Gymnasts
Rhys McClenaghan from Down will compete in the Men’s Pommel Horse and Meg Ryan from Cork in the Women’s All-Around
McClenaghan qualified for Tokyo 2020 based on his World Championship performance in October 2019 when he finished third, setting himself up as one of the favourites heading into this year’s Games.
Road cyclists
Three riders, Dan Martin, Nicolas Roche and Eddie Dunbar will compete in the Road Race, with Roche also competing in the Time Trial.
Roche is entering his fourth Games, while his cousin Dan Martin will be racing in his third Games. This will be Dunbar’s first Games.
Boxing
Seven boxers will represent Ireland in the Games with Brendan Irvine, who qualified for Tokyo in the European Olympic Qualifiers in London last year, named as team captain of the boxing squad.
The squad includes Kellie Harrington, Aoife O’Rourke, Michaela Walsh, Aidan Walsh and Emmet Brennan and Kurt Walker who was confirmed following the close of rankings.
Sailing
Team Ireland has officially selected a team of three sailors to compete in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.
Olympic Silver Medallist Annalise Murphy is set to compete in her third Olympic Games in the Laser Radial Women, and her teammates Robert Dickson and Seán Waddilove will compete in the 49er Men.
Triathletes
Two triathletes will fly the flag for Ireland in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.

Carolyn Hayes has been selected to compete in the Individual Women’s event, and Russell White in the Individual Men’s event.
Modern Pentathlon
Natalya Coyle will compete in her third Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.
Coyle confirmed her spot at the European Championships in Bath in 2019.
Hockey
In November 2019, the women’s hockey team became the first Irish women’s hockey team to qualify for the Olympic Games when they beat Canada.
The Tokyo 2020 team will be mostly formed from the record-breaking squad.
Rowing
Thirteen rowers will represent Ireland this year with Fintan McCarthy, and Paul O’Donovan qualified for the Lightweight Men’s Double Scull with Gary O’Donovan as a reserve.
Sanita Puspure will compete in the Women’s Single with Ronan Byrne, Philip Doyle competing in the Men’s Double Scull.
Emily Hegarty, Fiona Murtagh, Eimear Lamb and Aifric Keogh will compete in the Women’s Four with Monika Dukarska and Aileen Crowley competing in the Women’s Pair.
Finally, Aoife Casey and Margaret Cremen will compete in the Lightweight Women’s Double Scull.
Track cycling
Four athletes and two reserve riders have been named to compete.
In the Women’s Madison Rio Olympian Shannon McCurley will be joined by Emily Kay, with Kay also competing in the Omnium.
The Men’s Madison will be Mark Downey and Felix English, one of the two will also compete in the Omnium, but will be decided closer to the Games.
Badminton
Nhat Nguyen has been officially selected to represent Team Ireland in the Badminton Men’s Singles at the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.
Athletics
Phil Healy will compete in the 200m and 400m race with Nadia Power, Siofra Cleirigh Buttner and Louise Shanahan all running in the 800m.
Ciara Mageean and Sarah Healy will compete in the 1,500m race with Sarah Lavin competing in the hurdles.
Michelle Finn and Eilish Flanagan will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase.
For the men Leon Reid and Marcus Lawler will run in the 200m race with Mark English competing in the 800m.
Andre Coscoran will compete in the 1,500m with Tom Barr running in the 400m hurdles.
Fionnuala McCormack, Aoide Cooke, Paul Pollock, Kevin Seaward and Stephen Scullion will compete in the marathon.
David Kenny will race in the 20k walk with Alex Wright and Brendan Boyce competing in the 50k walk.
Equestrian
Cathal Daniels, Sarah Ennis and Sam Watson are the three riders in the Eventing event with Bertram Allen, Darragh Kenny and Cian O’Connor competing in the Showjumping.
Heike Holstein will compete in Dressage.
Judo
Megan Fletcher will compete in the middle weight while her brother Ben will compete in the half heavy weight event.
Rugby
The men’s team qualified after beating France in the final world qualifying tournament becoming the first Irish ruby team to qualify for the Olympics.
Swimming
Six Irish swimmers have qualified as Shane Ryan, Mona McSharry and Danielle Hill will compete in the 100m backstroke.
Darragh Greene will compete in the 100m and 200m breaststroke with Daniel Wiffen competing in the 800m freestyle.
Ellen Walshe will compete in the 200m individual medley.
Taekwondo
Jack Wooley will be Ireland’s first ever Taekwondo representative as he ranks 7 th in the world.
