Meet the alumni of closure-threatened De La Salle Academy

Over its history of nearly a century, the De La Salle Academy in Croxteth has seen many changes.

But soon it could be facing the biggest one of all - closure.

The Catholic secondary school, which caters for boys from the age of 11 to 18, has been issued with a termination warning notice that could see it shut down.

Staff at the De La Salle Academy were informed of the shock notice just hours before breaking up for the half-term holiday last Friday.

The warning notice was issued to the De La Salle Academy Trust - which runs the Croxteth school - by the Regional Schools Commissioner.

The school has undergone several name changes during its existence, reflecting the different educational policies of the time - being known successively as De La Salle Grammar School, De La Salle RC Comprehensive School and De La Salle Humanities College.

It gained academy status in January 2011, to become The De La Salle Academy.

Over its long history, many well-known figures have passed through the school's doors - some of them going on to become household names.

Its most notable alumnus of recent years is Wayne Rooney - who was so good at football he was in Everton's academy while still a pupil at the school which he attended from 1997 to 2002.

He went straight into the Toffees' first-team squad as soon as he left.

Nearly all the school's most recent well-known former pupils entered the sporting field once they left education.

Adam Farley , former Everton FC player, was a pupil at the school from 1991 to 1996.

Francis Jeffers , player formerly of Everton, Arsenal and Newcastle United Jets attended the school from 1992 to 1997.

John McGreal , former Tranmere player, attended from 1983 to 1988.

Steve Smith , a retired high jumper and Olympic bronze medallist at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, Georgia, attended from 1984 to 1989.

James Wallace , currently a Fleetwood Town footballer, was also on Everton's books between 2008 and 2012.

One notable exception to the sporting alumni is DJ and presenter Anthony Dunne , who was a pupil at the school from 1991 to 1996.

A more varied list of names can be found from further back in the school's history when it was still known as De La Salle Grammar School for Boys.

These include the actors David Morrissey and Mark McGann, while in the field of music Peter Coyle - singer in 80s pop band The Lotus Eaters - also went there.

Politicians such as Terry Fields, the Labour MP for Liverpool Broadgreen from 1983-92, is also a former De La Salle boy, as is the journalist Brian Reade.
