Perhaps for many sending Christmas cards is outdated, but we found some Dubs who are still keeping the festive tradition alive.
We met Elizabeth Donohoe from Walkinstown and Evelyn Murtagh from Ballyfermot who were on their way to the GPO to send Christmas cards. And these ladies took their Christmas cards sending tradition very seriously – Evelyn sends 90 cards a year while Elizabeth sends about 50.
Evelyn’s large family is one of the reasons for her impressive card number. “There’s 11 of us in the family. And then some of them have children that I send to - they’re grown up children now so I send to them as well.” But she also sends it to friends and people she “just got to know over the years from holidays and things like that”.

However, with the price of stamps having gone up in recent years, Evelyn’s Christmas season tradition has gotten expensive. She has spent €50 so far just on stamps and additional €20 to €30 euro on the stamps that go across the water. The standard national letter stamp increased this spring from €1.10 to €1.25, while the international one increased from €2 to €2.20. But Evelyn says it’s totally worth it. “It’s the only thing that keeps you going.”
Elizabeth told us she doesn’t send as many cards as she used to. “I got to that age where people are beginning to drop off, you know.” Her 50 cards a year are still an impressive number. She sends them to her family and friends in Ireland and to her family abroad. “I still have nieces and a brother in London and they love to get Christmas cards and Mass cards in the Christmas cards to keep them going for next year.”
“Everyone likes to get a Christmas card,” she said. “People like to know that they are remembered. And it’s nice to know people are thinking about you, even if it’s only at Christmas time.”
