Meet Ayrshire's most successful boxing club and their four new Scottish champions

An Irvine boxing club brought back a haul of medals from the Scottish Championships at the weekend.

VIneburgh produced four gold medallists from the event in Motherwell.

Keely McCutcheon, 16, won gold in the 54kg junior category, with Brooke Neely, 14, bagging top prize in the 48kg category.

Youngsters Mason Salmon and Aaron Connor scooped gold in the schoolboys 34kg and 38kg respectively.

Coach Alec Mullen said: “I am delighted for them.”

The success comes on the back of the club hitting a magnificent medal milestone with title winning performances at the Western District Schools and Juniors Championships the week before.

Aaron Connor, Mason Salmon and Brooke Neely won their respective weight categories to take the club’s gold tally at major championships to 75 in the 13 years since it was founded.

And Keely McCutcheon was unlucky not to make it 76 after she lost a close final in the girls 54kg category.

Irvine Vineburgh's gold medal tally is composed of 40 Scottish, 30 Western District and five British titles.

Alec said: “The kids are a credit to themselves and the club. It’s all down to their hard work. They are not shirkers in training and the rewards are there for all to see.

“I think it’s fair to say we’re most successful boxing club in Ayrshire and that’s down to the hard work of everyone from the boxers to the coaches.”
