'Meet at the Club World Cup' - River Plate fans react to Julian Alvarez's move to Man City

River Plate fans have expressed their disappointment at the news that last season's top goalscorer Julian Alvarez will become a Manchester City player at the end of the season.

His 18 goals in 25 Liga Professional appearances helped end their seven-year wait to become champions of Argentina as they coasted to a seven-point lead.

Alvarez puts pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal at the Etihad but will remain in his native Argentina until July and play a role in the title defence for Marcello Gallardo's side.

He joins the Blues after scoring 36 goals in 96 appearances, contributing 23 assists.

His move to the Premier League was met with pride from the reigning domestic champions in Argentina but their fans greeted the news with pain with a twinge of humour.

River Plate maintain his services for the upcoming season which kicks off in the second week of February when they visit Union.

Following the announcement, via the River Plate official website, Club President Jorge Brito said : "For us, it is a proud [moment] that one of the most important clubs in the world has been interested in a player like Julián Álvarez.

"[a player who] trained at the Club since 2015, who represents the way of playing and being of the professionals that come out of our lower-division [reserves].

He added: "It is a milestone that marks the beginning of the link between River Plate and Manchester City, which we hope will bear much fruit for both clubs."
