Tombstone found in Govan graveyard 'in peak condition' after historical find

Scotland has a rich and complex history, however, you may be unaware that Glasgow holds one of the most important collections of historic early medieval carved stones.

Govan Old Church holds a unique collection which dates back as far as the ninth century, to commemorate the power of those who ruled the Kingdom of Strathclyde. An early modern day tombstone from the 17th or 18th century has been found deep under the ground at Govan Old Parish Church.

Excavations are currently taking place led by Stephen Driscoll, professor of historical archaeology at the University of Glasgow, which have been running since last summer.

Surprisingly in peak condition, the latest discovery was made by Govan Stones volunteers and Glasgow University's archaeology department on March 12.

When faced with closure of Govan Old in 2017, the community worked tirelessly on a rescue plan which came to fruition in 2016 with a new trust taking ownership - the Govan Heritage Trust.

The main aim of The Govan Stones organisation is to preserve the museum and it's historic collection, which they hope to open to the public.

Speaking to Glasgow Live, Project Development Officer, Frazer Capie said: "It's one of the largest collections of early medieval sculpture in the UK, and it's the only large collection which is not in state care.

"It's an amazing asset, one which was at risk for a while when they didn't know what was going to happen with the building."

Govan Old is set to open it's doors to the public on April 1, opening from 1pm to 4pm in the afternoons, where visitors can see the fascinating sculptures for themselves.

The Viking-age treasures have been underground in Govan Old church yard for over thousands of years, with more appearing which were once thought to have been lost.

Frazer said "We are really looking forward to it - we have a whole load of volunteers who will help to open up the building, give guided tours, look after our shop and greet the public.

The museum is set to open just in time for Easter, for more information visit here.
