Meath take action against PR team and apologise to Down for offensive tweet

The Meath county board have been forced to apologise after an embarrassing social media gaffe on Sunday night when they blasted the facilities at Ballycran in Co Down.

A tweet was posted in response to Offaly’s 0-21 to 0-18 win over Down at the venue on Sunday with a comment from the official Meath account referring to McKenna Park as a “kip” and stating that inter-county games should not be played there.

Meath hurlers lost out to Down at Ballycran in the Joe McDonagh Cup last season, but got their 2023 Division 2B campaign off to a winning start by beating Wicklow 2-24 to 2-14 in Navan on Saturday.

Down manager Ronan Sheehan highlighted the offence remark on Twitter on Sunday night and the post has since been deleted.

In a statement, Meath GAA said: "Coiste na Mí C.L.G. are aware of an offensive tweet coming from our Twitter account this afternoon. This tweet in no way reflects the views of Coiste na Mí C.L.G.

"A full investigation of how the tweet was posted commenced in the aftermath of the tweet and is currently underway.

"We have been in contact with the Down County Board apologising for the tweet which was deleted as soon as we became aware of it."

In a further statement issued on Monday, the Meath county board said the person responsible for sending the tweet is no longer a member of their PR team.

"Following an investigation in relation to an offensive tweet posted on the Meath GAA Twitter account, a member of the Public Relations team has this morning accepted responsibility for posting the tweet.

"Coiste na Mí C.L.G. can confirm that this person is no longer a member of the Public Relations team. We apologise once again for the offence caused by the tweet."
