Viewers have lavished praise on Channel 4’s Me and My Penis, which made history after it broadcasted images of an erect penis for the first time on British television.
The documentary aimed to explore masculinity in 21st century Britain, and brought a series of men together to discuss what they thought about their appendage.
The show was overseen by British photographer and artist Ajamu X, who took pictures and talked in depth with men about their penises, and masculinity in general.
While the show could have been a lewd, giggling look at the male form, viewers praised Me and My Penis for its sombre and ground-breaking dissection of modern-day masculinity – with many taking to Twitter to share their views.
One viewer hailed it as “brilliant”.
Others described the show as “powerful”.
Another said it was “beautiful seeing men so free and open.”
While one viewer described its broadcast as a “turning point” in TV history.
Me and My Penis was commissioned following the success of Channel 4’s previous documentary 100 Vaginas, with Ajamu being signed to help men get in touch with their genitals.
“It was incredibly hard to find an artist who would be asking questions about what it means to be a man, questioning definitions, being playful with definitions… and someone who, 20 years ago, was asking questions about gender and the confines and rigidity of masculinity that now we're taking for granted,” producer Susanne Curran told GQ.
“The business I’m in is: what story are we saying? What is the answer to the question?”
