Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour took a bold step by swapping the English Premier League for Serie A last summer, but their decision to join Napoli is proving to be a masterstroke.
The Scotland internationals were both instrumental in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Fiorentina, a result that moves the Partenopei just a point behind league leaders Inter Milan.
McTominay, in particular, delivered a near-flawless midfield display, registering a remarkable 100 per cent accuracy in three key areas.
The 28-year-old completed all 26 of his passes, won all six of his duels, and successfully executed all three of his long passes. He also completed four out of five dribbles, underlining his growing confidence in possession.

While McTominay provided balance and efficiency, Gilmour was the engine room of Napoli’s midfield, producing a tenacious performance that saw him record the most tackles of any player on the pitch.
The former Chelsea prodigy has seamlessly adapted to the demands of Italian football, combining his technical skill with an increasing physical presence.
Their continued rise in Naples is excellent news for Scotland boss Steve Clarke, who names his squad on Tuesday for the crucial UEFA Nations League play-off against Greece.
There was a brief worry about McTominay’s fitness after he was substituted with four minutes remaining against Fiorentina as he winced in pain.
But Napoli manager Antonio Conte is convinced the ex-Manchester United star will be fit and available for international selection.
"He was tired, no problem, it shouldn't be anything special,” Conte explained post match.
