Rory McIlroy faced a series of challenges during the first round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, England. Despite losing the club head on his 9-iron during a shot on the par-5 No. 12, McIlroy managed to post a solid 5-under 67, putting him two strokes behind the leader, Matthew Baldwin.
McIlroy, ranked No. 3 in the world, showcased resilience throughout the round. After a peculiar incident where the head of his 9-iron detached mid-swing, he recovered well and even made a back-handed putt next to a water hazard to save par on the 8th hole.
Following the club mishap, McIlroy had his 9-iron repaired and continued his round, ultimately finishing with seven birdies. However, a wayward second shot on the final hole led to a bogey, dropping him out of a share of the lead at the time.
Meanwhile, Matthew Baldwin, ranked No. 363, impressed with a bogey-free 65 to claim the top spot after the first round. Baldwin's performance marked a return to form after recent struggles, including four consecutive missed cuts.
Other notable performances included Thomas Detry, who shot a 66 to tie for second place with Niklas Norgaard. The day also saw a strong showing from a group of players that included Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Billy Horschel, and Victor Perez.
McIlroy's participation in the tournament came just days after a runner-up finish at the Irish Open. Despite the disappointment of falling short in his home event, McIlroy remained focused and determined to perform well at the BMW PGA Championship.
As the tournament progresses, golf fans eagerly anticipate how McIlroy and the rest of the field will fare in one of the European Tour's premier events.
