McGregor sends 'shot in the arm' message to Celtic prospects after title win

Callum McGregor has urged Celtic's youth prospects to take inspiration from James Forrest's heroics with the club.

The winger, who has spent his entire career at the Hoops after coming through the academy, became the club's most decorated player at the weekend as they put the seal on their inevitable latest title win with a thumping of Dundee United.

That was the 33-year-old's 13th top flight title and his 26th trophy win with his boyhood club, taking him ahead of the legendary Bobby Lennox who was part of 25 trophy wins in his day.

Forrest was due to go and see his fellow club great in the wake of taking his record.

And captain McGregor has told the young players in the club's academy that his teammate should be proof that they can go on and achieve their dreams with Celtic having come through the ranks.

He told Celtic TV: “For somebody so humble and to have come through the Academy, for the young lads who’re in the Academy now it should be a huge shot in the arm for them to watch that.

“There have been so many special players who have played for this club over the years, and now James sits there on the top, and it couldn’t happen to a better person – the way he dedicates his life to football and Celtic.

“It’s an amazing achievement for him and his family. They’ll be so proud of them and like I said, it’s a big shot in the arm for the players in the Academy.

"It shows you that there’s a platform there and you’ve just got to keep working, but this is for James.”

On going to see Lennox, Forrest had said: "I’ve met Bobby Lennox a few times at games and stuff, and I am planning to go and see him this week as well.

"People say that I have gone beyond him.

"At this club, it is not about one player or two players, it is so many players, it is the fans, the staff you don’t see behind the scenes and all of that as well; there are so many people you can credit.

"I have met his family, and they are all so humble, and I think that stands you in good stead for players coming through."
