McFly took unlikely inspiration from spoof rock band while recording new album

With a new album inspired by ’80s rock, McFly have vowed to become the new Spinal Tap.

The group returned to the charts with their anthem Where Did All The Guitars Go? and have made a record reminiscent of the band from the spoof rockumentary.

“We are the Spinal Tap of now,” announces guitarist Danny Jones, with a chuckle.

“There were certainly some Spinal Tap moments recording the album,” laughs Harry Judd of new record Power to Play. “Just some of the conversations we’re having. I mean, I guess being in a band anyway, there’s always Spinal Tap moments.

“We’ve got a song called Land of the Bees, and just the whole concept and the lyrics and everything. So quite obscure and quite Spinal Tap.”

The song is inspired by Rush, and contains lyrics including: “We’re hanging by a thread/But we’re ready to bang some heads.”

Harry adds: “The conversations we had writing those lyrics was quite Spinal Tap, giving the explanation or justification for these weird lyrics.”

However, despite the influences, the boys will not be adopting heavily hairsprayed, backcombed mullets for their upcoming tour. “We don’t want it to be a pastiche,” Harry said.
