McFly stopped their Leeds gig for an emotional tribute to a superfan who died earlier this year.
McFly opened the first night of the summer series at Millennium Square in Leeds city centre with a Thursday evening headline show. During the performance, the band took a moment to reflect on the life of superfan Kel McGowan.
Ahead of the gig, a message flashed on the screen which read: “Raise your glowsticks and phone torches during Star Girl in memory of Kel.”

After collapsing in February, Kel was treated at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary Intensive Care Unit. She sadly died soon after.
Kel was very well known to McFly and other fans of the band. Kel was also a big fan of The Struts.
A fundraising page has been set up in the memory of Kel raising money for the hospital unit where she received treatment. In tribute to Kel, who was also known as ‘McFly Maven’, it reads: “Kel would meet up with fans so no one felt they went to a gig or an event alone. She would record videos at gigs for the fans who couldn't attend and/or share them live. She was also an active part of the online groups.”
There has been a campaign to pay tribute to Kel during the Leeds Millennium Square McFly show. It is understood her mum was among the crowd when the touching tribute took place.
