McFly's Tom Fletcher rushed to hospital after feeling like his face was 'smashed'

Tom Fletcher made a visit to hospital after a flare-up of a condition which he said made him look like he’d been “smashed in the face”.

The McFly singer, 39, suffers from an eye condition called uveitis - which causes pain, redness and blurry vision.

Sharing his ordeal on his Instagram stories, Fletcher said he was treated at The Western Eye Hospital’s A&E department in London.

“Not the day I had planned. Uveitis sucks! My autoimmune thing flared up out of nowhere last night,” he wrote.

Fletcher revealed he is now on eye drops for six weeks (Instagram @tomfletcher) (Instagram @tomfletcher)

“Woke up feeling (and looking) like I'd been smashed in the face! This is after it had calmed down and I could see again.”

Fletcher also thanked the doctors and nurses at the hospital who provided treatment, and said he would now be on a six week course of steroid eye drops.

“Hate having to come here but so thankful it exists,” Fletcher, who also had a flare-up in 2023, added.

“The doctors and nurses have helped me out so many times now.”

The NHS says it is important to get uveitis treated quickly so it doesn’t cause long-term complications such as vision loss and blindness.

Earlier this year, the singer spoke of his “overwhelming pride” for his son, Buzz, after he made his musical debut in Starlight Express.

Buzz, 10, portrayed the narrator Control in the Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber roller skate musical, where he acts as announcer during the steam engine’s battle against the diesel locomotive.

He wrote on Instagram that he had been “been keeping this quiet for a little while” before Buzz’s debut performance in January at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre.

He added: “I can’t even begin to describe the overwhelming pride (and nerves!) watching him run out onto that stage and deliver those opening lines and then give the most amazing performance. It was total magic and a memory for us all that will never be forgotten!

“I can’t thank the whole Starlight team enough for believing in him and giving him this amazing opportunity to be part of this absolute spectacle of a show.”

Fletcher, also an author of children’s books, shares three sons – Buzz, Buddy, and Max, with wife Giovanna Fletcher.
