If you've ever ordered a McFlurry from McDonald's, the chances are you'll have been left disappointed when trying to suck up the last of your ice cream - only to discover the hollow end of the spoon is not actually a straw.
For years fast-food lovers have been convinced the plastic spoons were actually a design defect, because if you can't use them as a straw then why on Earth are they made that shape?
Well, it turns out there's actually a perfectly logical explanation for it, and it has nothing to do with straws at all.
A resurfaced TikTok, which originally went viral a couple of years ago, has revealed the true purpose behind the square spoons and it's actually designed for McDonald's staff.

The video, posted to the @foodies TikTok account, shows that the end of the spoon is designed to attached to the end of a mechanical whisk, which can then be used to mix up your McFlurry before it's served to you. Who knew?
"If you didn't know, now you do," they wrote. We do indeed, and judging by the comments, it seems like everyone is just as baffled as us.
"My life is complete so now I may die in peace," one TikTok user joked, while another added: "Omg what my McDonald’s doesn’t mix the McFlurry!"
"Wow! You just solved one of my entire life mysteries," a third wrote, while a fourth replied: "Well that explains it after all these years."
Well, now we know, but it probably won't stop us from automatically trying to use it as a straw every time we order a McFlurry.
