McDonald's responds after DIY SOS star Nick Knowles shares 'milkshake mystery'

McDonald's have shared their response after Nick Knowles shared his theories behind the chain's much-loved milkshakes - or lack of them in his case. The DIY SOS star took to social media last week to complain after being consistently disappointed on his trips through the golden arches.

He soon got fans wading into his theory as to why he's been to various restaurants and still been able to get his sweet drink fix. And spent a lot of time monitoring the situation. He tweeted: "The big McDonalds milkshake mystery. [I] don’t eat McDonalds but I like a milkshake.

"Over 4 months 9 different drive throughs have said (after 30 min wait) the milkshake machine is broken!!! Apart from a suggestion to put up a sign so people don’t waste their time wtf is going on?"

The tweet racked up more than 100 responses with many of Nick's followers shared similar experiences. @m28taylor said: "Yep! I’ve had many moans at my local drive thru about this…. Easy peasy sign which will improve customer satisfaction!" @devpom1 replied: "It’s the same around my area! Many restaurants stating broken machines."

@ohgodyoufool joked: "The milkshake/McFlurry machine at McDonalds constantly being broken has been a thing since the Romans invaded." @nej1965 added: "Ditto mcflurrys, have queued up in drive through only to be told that machine is broken, so have driven straight out again."

But when contacted by Nottinghamshire Live, McDonald's gave the following statement: "At McDonald’s, customer satisfaction is a priority of ours and we’re disappointed when we hear of any experience that falls short of our usual high standards. However, we strongly refute any suggestion that milkshakes or ice creams are not served intentionally. Both products are very popular and straightforward to prepare and serve.

"On occasion, our iconic McFlurry or milkshakes are unavailable due to the shake and soft-serve machine undergoing regular cleans and heat treatment cycles. We understand that it can be frustrating when a product isn’t available and we are grateful for our customers’ understanding and patience."

McDonald's said its shake and soft-serve machines undergo heat treatment cycles every 24 hours. They’re also disassembled, sanitised and cleaned every 14 days.

But it appears Nick wasn't happy with the response. In reply to a follower who suggested another popular chain has a similar issue, here replied: "'At @McDonaldsUK customer satisfaction is a priority of ours.. we strongly refute any suggestion that milkshakes or ice creams are not served intentionally'. You can’t just say it’s a priority & we move on when it’s clear on my timeline you’re failing customers countrywide."
