McDonald’s drink lids have ‘buttons’ on - but why, and what do they do?

Eagle-eyed McDonald’s customers have noticed something strange about the lids of the drinks, and it’s seriously baffled them for a long time.

If you’ve ever spent time idly looking around whilst in your local McDonald’s restaurant, your eyes may have been drawn to the top of your drink as you devour your chicken nuggets, Big Mac or McPlant. And, on the lid of your milkshake, or Coke, you would’ve noticed some raised bumps on top, which may or may not have been pushed in.

The buttons on the lids of drinks have baffled some diners, but now McDonald’s workers have confirmed what the bumpy lids mean. And, it’s all to do with staff being able to tell the difference between different drinks, the Mirror reported.

The last thing staff members want to do is accidentally give someone a Diet Coke if they’ve ordered themselves a sweet treat on purpose - that wouldn't go down well. It would also be difficult to remember which drink is which in a large order.

The buttons on the lid are labelled 'Diet/Light', 'No Caff', '1' and '2' - and one customer who found staff had pressed in the number one button on one of their drinks realised they had no clue what it meant.

People have been confused by the 'buttons' on top of McDonald's drinks (Phil Norris)

They wrote on Reddit: "My question is about the McDonald's drink lids which have the 'buttons' on them. I just ordered two drinks, one diet coke and one coke classic, and on one of them had the number '1' button pressed.

"The buttons are the numbers 1 and 2, no caff, diet/light. The only one pressed was the number 1. Which one is diet? Should they have just pushed the diet one in?

"The number 1 means nothing to me but is important I know which is which. Thank you!" McDonald's workers came forward to clarify what it all means - and it seems the labels above the buttons which left the customer confused don't really mean anything at all. One replied: "Yeah seems to be different for every store but we usually just push 1 random button for Diet Coke and then either 2 random or all 4 buttons for Coke Zero.

"It’s just faster to push random buttons than spend the time to actually find the diet button on every lid I guess." A second employee echoed this, writing: "We press one for Diet and either two or four for Zero."

And another added: "Procedure is any one for diet and two next to each other for zero." So, if you’re ever left confused by a drink order next time, just remember one button pushed in is the diet version of the drink, and either two or four is a zero sugar version.
