McDonald's have announced a bold move to ban an item in all their UK restaurants- leaving customers of the global food franchise fuming . The junk food giant will be ditching all plastic cutlery and instead replacing it with paper alternatives, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The new environmentally conscious cutlery is made from renewable, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified pressed-paper and will be replacing the axed plastic utensils across the entirety of the nations McDonald's sites. Nina Prichard, head of sustainable and ethical sourcing at McDonald's claims the move is to cut down on waste and further increase their use of sustainable materials.
She said: "As a business, we're committed to taking action on packaging and waste and increasing our use of sustainable materials. We're pleased to announce another step forward in eliminating single-use plastics and it's great to be switching our famous McFlurry spoons to this new paper-based material."
Despite the move to be more a more environmentally friendly business, customers have been left unhappy by the announcement, commenting on the poor quality of the brand's paper straws as a comparison. McDonald's ditched their plastic straws back in 2018, with fast food fans fearing the new utensils will be equally 'useless'.
Reacting to the latest announcement on social media, Twitter user Holly said: "Eating with your hands would be more successful than paper cutlery. Their paper straws are beyond a joke and fall apart whilst using them.
"Just use a lid with a hole to sip your drinks instead. As for paper cutlery, I'd be more inclined to keep a proper set in the car if I knew the alternative was paper."
Fellow Twitter user, Jeff, also commented on the straw comparison, writing: "Paper straws don’t work why should forks and knives?", whilst Alistair added: "Paper straws complete waste of time, paper and liquid don't mix."
LG said: "Paper straws are bad enough how do you eat with paper cutlery." Callum said: "Maccies using paper spoons as well as straws now is criminal."
Fem added: "Must abolish the paper straws. Ruined my entire day when I got one sip before it disintegrated."
