McDonald's has, at least since the late 1970s, been about more than just the chain's food. It pioneered the idea of using toys to excite kids about coming into its stores when it launched the Happy Meal in 1979.
That famed kid's meal included toys from popular brands as well as tie-ins with big movies. McDonald's (MCD) -) never limited itself to promotions aimed directly at kids. It also had giveaways featuring Coca-Cola glasses and Star Wars that had a lot of appeal for adults as well.
DON'T MISS: McDonald's menu adds a potentially dangerous item
In recent years, it has actually become somewhat frowned upon to use toys to make unhealthy food more attractive to kids so the chain has mixed up its offerings. Some of McDonald's promotions -- like its partnerships with Walt Disney and Pokemon -- have led to items that appeal to all ages.
Even something like the Pikachu Happy Meal boxes, a product ostensibly aimed at kids, also attract collectors and adults who either still love the character or view it nostalgically. And, of course, the chain also had its collaboration with Cactus Plant Flea Market for Happy Meal toys that caused the meals to be unofficially dubbed "Adult Happy Meals."
Now, McDonald's has partnered with another popular brand that appeals to adults to bring back a unique take on a Halloween favorite.
McDonald's has a new take on Halloween buckets
In past years, McDonald's has offered Halloween Boo Buckets, plastic pails with food inside that could be reused for trick or treating. They first appeared in 1986 and have been brought back multiple times since then.
They come in three versions: a white McBoo bucket, the orange McPunk'n, and a green witch-like McGoblin. McDonald's has not shared whether it plans to bring the Boo Buckets back for this Halloween, but the chain has partnered with Loungefly, a kitschy bag company, for Boo Buckets crossbody bags.
Loungefly also makes a "McDonald's Hamburglar Cosplay Mini Backpack" which can be found on its website for $63. The company, which targets all ages, also has deals with Walt Disney (DIS) -) for a number of its most popular franchises.
The Boo Buckets will come in two varieties, one for McPunk'n and the other for McGoblin. Loungefly described the McPunk'n bag as follows:
"Your bucket list just got more fashionable! Set out on fun-filled adventures with our Loungefly McDonald’s Halloween Happy Meal McPunk’n Crossbody Bag. This fully figural bag takes on the shape of a classic McDonald’s Happy Meal pumpkin treat bucket, complete with a wickedly charming jack-o’-lantern face. In the dark, this bag glows!" the company shared.
McBoo does not appear to be included in the lineup. Each bag costs $70 and they are not for sale yet. The company does offer a "notify me" feature on its website for people looking to get one of the sure-to-sell-out bags.
Loungefly offers a full array of Halloween bags including ones themed to Chucky, Annabelle, and Michael Myers of "Halloween" movie fame. There are also multiple "Killer Clowns From Outer Space" products and, for people who want a more mild scare, items themed to the "Goosebumps" books.
Here’s why we just bought shares in this fast-food chain! (It’s not what you think)
