Ally McCoist has weighed in on the upcoming Europa League face-off between Rangers and Manchester United, stating that it’s “almost impossible” to predict the outcome.
This clash sees Philippe Clement’s Rangers sitting in eighth place going into the penultimate league-phase fixture at Old Trafford on Thursday night, just a point behind the faltering Red Devils.
Manchester United, now under the leadership of Ruben Amorim, have had a tumultuous season, with six losses in their last 11 English Premier League matches.
Their inconsistent form raises doubts about their ability to rise to the occasion and overcome the Scottish Premiership giants, even if they did show that they can turn it on by earning a recent draw against Liverpool and defeating Arsenal in the FA Cup.
Conversely, while Rangers have struggled on the road domestically, they’ve consistently shown that they can shine during European competitions.
McCoist reckons both teams are "average", which makes it tough to suggest who will triumph come full-time.

“I think they’re both average [Manchester United and Rangers], at that level I think they’re both average,” the legendary Rangers striker told talkSPORT.
“I think Rangers have been terrific away from home in Europe, really poor away from home domestically and Manchester United, you just absolutely do not know what you’re going to get.
“I was at the Southampton game and they should have beat them, Amad scored a hat trick in the last eight minutes and I’m telling you, Southampton should have beaten them.
"It’s almost impossible to call because I think they’re both in average form.”
