Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is actively supporting Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as they gear up for the upcoming election. Duggan, whose name is being considered for a potential run for Michigan governor, recognizes the significance of rallying support from his majority Black city for the Democratic candidates.

Mayors in major cities, typically elected along party lines, are leveraging their influence to mobilize voters. Detroit, a Democratic stronghold, is expected to have a voter turnout exceeding 50% in the general election.

Mayors are not only focused on political alliances but also on securing federal funding for their communities. They emphasize the importance of addressing critical issues such as housing and infrastructure.

Detroit has seen substantial investments in affordable housing projects, with federal, state, and city funds playing a crucial role. The city received significant federal grant funding under the Trump administration, but the Biden administration has committed over $2 billion to Detroit, accelerating its recovery.

The American Rescue Plan, a federal relief measure signed by President Biden, has been instrumental in aiding Detroit's financial stability and recovery. Under Mayor Duggan's leadership, the city has overcome budget deficits and stabilized its finances.

Mayors across party lines are prioritizing housing issues, recognizing the need for comprehensive solutions. They are engaging with constituents and advocating for policies that benefit their cities.

While some mayors, like Mesa Mayor John Giles, are endorsing Democratic candidates, others, such as Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, are supporting Republican nominees. The engagement of mayors in partisan politics intensifies during election seasons as they seek to establish favorable relationships with the incoming administration.

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who recently had his sentence commuted by Trump, highlights the importance of mayors having access to the White House for the benefit of their cities. Kilpatrick, now a political consultant, emphasizes the significance of engaging with federal government entities when necessary.

Mayors like Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson are actively encouraging voter participation and stressing the importance of civic engagement. They view democracy as a collective responsibility that requires active participation from all eligible voters.
