The Mayor of London has joined the criticism of West Ham and David Moyes for selecting Kurt Zouma for Tuesday's Premier League clash with Watford.
The Hammers ran out 1-0 winners with Zouma performing well in the backline but his inclusion has drawn widespread condemnation from charities, politicians, sponsors and former players alike.
Essex Police had confirmed that "urgent enquiries" are ongoing and Sadiq Khan has called for Zouma to face criminal prosecution for his actions.
The Mayor of London told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: "We have got to hold to account when we don’t maintain high standards. I think this footballer is a disgrace. I think the RSPCA and the police should be looking into a criminal prosecution.
"I think West Ham, as this player’s employer and as a club that is loved by tens of thousands of fans across London and the country, should be taking action.
"I think Mr Zouma himself should reflect on what he’s done. He should show some contrition. If you get away with bad behaviour, whether you’re the Prime Minister, mayor or a footballer, young people who look up to you think that’s the way to behave and it’s okay."
The Mayor doubled down on his criticism of Moyes and Zouma when appearing on Sky News.
"It is despicable and I think a number of things need to happen urgently, I think the RSPCA and the police need to work together to prosecute this player," he said.
"I am disappointed in David Moyes and West Ham actually, I know how important three points are, I support a club as well, but I think they should have shown leadership and dropped him last night.
"I am worried when young people see Premier League footballers getting away with bad behavior or Prime Ministers or anybody else and think it okay and you can be successful and that's why it is really important for leaders and role models, whether you are a footballer, the Mayor or a journalist we are role models and should lead by example."
Zouma has apologised for his actions and will face an internal disciplinary hearing at West Ham for his actions in the coming days.
