Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham calls for an early general election

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham has called for an early General Election "to restore some sanity to British politics."

The Mayor was a guest on TV show Good Morning Britain, where he described the number of different chancellor's in the five years he has been holding Greater Manchester Green Summits as "An unbelievable state of affairs," and claimed the Conservative party had given up the right to govern, saying they were in "chaos," and were "disintegrating."

Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley asked the mayor if Labour taking the reins would seem strange after the Conservative party had been in power for so long but Burnham denied that would be the case.

The interview came amid rumours of Prime Minister Liz Truss being set to be ousted from The Conservative Party shortly after Jeremy Hunt replaced Kwasi Kwarteng as Chancellor.

Madeley asked: "Labour has been out of power for so long now, does it feel rather odd to consider the landscape changing to that extent?"

Burnham replied: "No not at all," and continued: "Keir has made the case for a Labour government, he set out his stall, he did so very effectively at the Labour conference, basically the Conservative party has been disintegrating. It needs to look itself in the mirror today and ask itself whether it has actually got what it takes to govern this country. I am at Greater Manchester Green summit today and I was just working out that we have had six chancellors of the exchequer in the five years we have been holding these summits.

"It is an unbelievable state of affairs, I think they have given up the right to govern such is the chaos they are in, and we should actually start looking to an early general election to restore some sanity to British politics and Keir Starmer is clearly the person that is bringing that."

He added: "Even the boss of Tesco said there is only one team on the pitch and when he says that I think it's time to let that team take over."
