Mayor asks Titans to postpone Week 16 game to reduce strain on power grid

UPDATE: The Week 16 game between the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans has been delayed by one hour, the team announced. The contest will now take place at 1:00 p.m. CDT.

With bitter cold temperatures hitting Nashville on Saturday, Mayor John Cooper has asked the Tennessee Titans to postpone their Week 16 game in order to lessen the strain on the power grid.

Cooper took to Twitter to notify residents rolling blackouts will continue, and he asked non-essential businesses to reduce their power usage, including the Titans.

“I’ve been informed that TVA’s unilateral rolling blackouts will continue. All non-essential businesses should reduce power usage. I’ve asked the Titans to postpone their 12pm game in solidarity with our neighbors. TVA needs to invest in infrastructure to withstand extreme temps,” Cooper wrote on Twitter.

Tennessee is set to host the Houston Texans in what will be one of the coldest games in the history of Nissan Stadium, if not the coldest.

It is not clear if the Titans and NFL will oblige, but chances are taking such a step at this late stage won’t be feasible. We’ll keep you updated on all of the latest developments as they happen and, of course, stay warm out there!
