Mayor and Sheriff among 19 Nottingham Labour councillors standing down

Nottingham's current Lord Mayor and Sheriff are among 19 Labour councillors who will not be standing again at the next local elections. Councillor David Mellen, the leader of the Labour-led Nottingham City Council, paid tribute to the councillors who would not be standing for re-election on May 4.

Current Lord Mayor, Councillor Wendy Smith, and the current Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Nicola Heaton, will both be standing down after the end of their current terms in May. Councillor Mellen said that taken together, the 19 councillors who are standing down have a combined service to the council of 243 years.

David Trimble, a former Lord Mayor and deputy leader of Nottingham City Council, is one of the longest-serving councillors who will be standing down in May. Other long-serving councillors not seeking re-election are Councillor Eunice Campbell-Clark and Councillor Dave Liversidge.

Several councillors, who currently hold senior Portfolio Holder roles at Nottingham City Council, will also be standing down. This includes Toby Neal, who holds the housing portfolio, Rebecca Langton, who holds the economic growth portfolio, and Sally Longford, who holds the environment portfolio.

Nottingham City Council will be among the authorities across the UK where elections will be held on May 4. The news of the Labour councillors standing down comes after it was recently reported that Nottingham's two Conservative councillors are both set not to stand again in May.

One of them, Councillor Roger Steel, has not been selected again as a candidate in a move which is said to have left the local party "in a mess." Councillor Andrew Rule says he does not currently intend to stand again in May in protest at Councillor Steel's treatment.

The confirmation of the Labour councillors standing down in May was made at a full council meeting on Monday (March 6). Councillors gave a standing ovation to their colleagues not seeking re-election.
