Mayo star Oisin Mullin opens up on transition from GAA to AFL as he joins Geelong Cats

Former Mayo star Oisín Mullin is hoping to the similarities between GAA and AFL will allow him to settle in quickly as he begins his new adventure down under with the Geelong Cats.

The flying half-back was meant to join up with Geelong at the beginning of last year but ended up playing one more season in the green and red of Mayo.

In a video released on the social channels of the Geelong Cats, Mullin speaks about his decision to move to Australia, his hopes of settling in quickly at his new club, and his pride in being a part of a growing contingency of Irish stars in Geelong.

"Was initially meant to come out in the start of July last year and covid's been an issue and kind of pushed it back and delayed the season, so I ended up waiting at home and committing to Mayo last year," Mullin explains.

"A lot of the attributes can be transferred over (From GAA to AFL). The games in comparison are similar enough. Obviously it's seen in the International rules series the similarities of the games.

"But just the transition of the athletic ability and stuff just kind of get on top of learning the game. And obviously the difference in the ball it's the oval and it's not the same as kicking a round ball.

"But like Zach (Tuohy) shows there, his kicking ability, the transition can happen like in Mark (O'Connor) and Rachel (Kearns).

"So yeah, just put in the Irish contingency here in Geelong and it's good, we're waving the flag."

Mullin has signed a two-year contract as an International rookie with the reigning Premiership champions and will link up with fellow Irish stars Mark O'Connor and Zach Tuohy in Victoria.

The 22-year-old's absence from the Mayo squad will be a huge blow for incoming boss Kevin McStay. The 60-year-old will have to make do without his two-time young player of the star wing-back as he bids to bring Sam Maguire back to Mayo and end a 71 year drought that stretches back to 1951.
