Mayer calls for rematch after Jonas controversially retains welterweight title

Mikaela Mayer wants a rematch with Natasha Jonas after a contentious split decision.

In a thrilling and hotly contested bout, Mikaela Mayer and Natasha Jonas showcased their skills and determination as they battled for the welterweight world title. The fight ended in a split decision, with Jonas retaining her IBF title. However, Mayer firmly believes that she deserves a rematch and has called upon Jonas to give her another chance in the ring.

The fight between the two champions was nothing short of an instant classic. Both fighters delivered an action-packed performance, leaving the audience enthralled. Many at ringside believed that Mayer had done enough to secure victory, but the judges saw it differently. One judge scored the fight 97-93 in Mayer's favor, while the other two gave it to Jonas by margins of 96-95, resulting in a split decision.

Despite not having a rematch clause in her contract, Mayer is determined to face Jonas once again. She believes that the fight was worth seeing again, especially considering the tough battle they both endured. Mayer stated, 'I think the fans really enjoyed it. I hope that her being the champion that she is, she'd want to give me a rematch. A rematch is warranted, and the fans want to see it.'

Jonas, on the other hand, did not rule out the possibility of a rematch. However, she also expressed interest in exploring other options as her career nears its conclusion. 'Anything is possible,' she said. 'The fights that I thought winning tonight would keep the doors open for, obviously for me with so many limited fights left, they're the ones that I'm looking for. But if it's something that the fans want, I'm always happy to oblige.'

Jonas empathized with Mayer, understanding the disappointment of being on the wrong end of a tight decision. The British boxer experienced similar heartbreak in the past, losing out on close calls in title fights against Terri Harper and Katie Taylor. Jonas offered words of encouragement and urged Mayer to use the defeat as motivation for future success. 'Her time will come again. She beats a lot of the champions that are already here. So please use that as motivation to go on and get the title that you deserve and become a two-weight world champion,' she said.

As the debate over a potential rematch continues, it is clear that both Mayer and Jonas have left an indelible mark on the welterweight division. Their fierce competition and sportsmanship have garnered the attention and respect of fans worldwide. Whether a rematch becomes a reality or not, the bout between Mayer and Jonas will be remembered as a thrilling showdown between two talented fighters aiming for greatness.
