Mayday call at Isle of Bute as passengers including two children rescued from stricken boat

A group of 10 people including two children have been rescued following a Mayday call from near a Scots isle.

Belfast Coastguard also received a 999 call from a boat which was close to the the Isle of Bute just after 4.30pm on Sunday, June 12.

Those aboard reported that they may be taking on water and were suffering from sea sickness due to the bad weather at the scene.

Upon hearing this, Belfast Coastguard immediately paged the volunteer RNLI lifeboat crews at Troon, Largs and also Tighnabruaich.

They also ensured to reach out to the Kames Coastguard Rescue Team to assist them in the urgent rescue operation of the group.

Largs RNLI inshore lifeboat, Atlantic 85 RA Wilson and Tighnabruaich inshore lifeboat, James and Helen Mason, arrived first.

They were based near Scalpsie Point on the western side of Bute and were followed by Troon all-weather lifeboat, RNLB Jim Moffat.

Three crew members were transferred to the casualty boat and initial care was provided for the group while they were all still aboard.

Examination by crew members found no further water ingress on the boat which made its own way to the lee of Inchmarnock Island.

After arriving, it was decided that everyone would be transferred along with a Largs crew member to the Troon all-weather lifeboat.

The group were then taken to Portavadie Marina at Loch Fyne where they were transferred to the care of Kames Coastguard Team.

As a precautionary measure, all 10 of them were assessed by paramedics from the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Their boat was taken to Tighnabruaich by the remaining RNLI crew members on board and was placed onto a mooring buoy.

With everyone ashore, all lifeboats were then able to return to their respective stations where they were made ready for service.

Duty Coxswain aboard Troon RNLI all-weather lifeboat Ethan Harris said: "Working together, each of the three volunteer RNLI lifeboat crews from Troon, Largs and Tighnabruaich, demonstrated a high level of team work which meant that all persons were safely transferred back to shore.

"Thanks also to the Kames Coastguard Team and the staff at Portavadie Marina for their assistance.’
