The May PlayStation Showcase has come and gone, bringing with it over 60 minutes of announcements, reveals, trailers, and teases for upcoming PS5 games. While we might not have gotten everything we expected – no Spider-Man 2 release date, for example – the showcase highlighted a broad range of games from Sony’s first-party studios and third parties alike. Metal Gear is back, Bungie is reviving a classic, and Square Enix is doing something that looks a lot like Splatoon.
Here’s everything you might have missed from the May PlayStation Showcase.
Spider-Man 2 trailer
Insomniac released a lengthy new Spider-Man 2 trailer showcasing the Marvel game’s gameplay for the first time. There’s still no release date, but you can check the trailer out in our Spider-Man 2 recap.
Neva, from the Gris makers
The makers of the critically acclaimed Gris are back with Neva, a beautiful adventure about a warrior, their woodland spirit friends, and the shadows that threaten to consume the world. It’s very Princess Mononoke and also a bit grim, since the hero’s antler dog dies.
Here’s the official description:
“Following a traumatic encounter with dark forces, Alba finds herself bound to a curious, mischievous wolf cub. Working together, the pair will help each other overcome increasingly dangerous situations.
The wolf will grow and mature over time—as will Alba’s relationship with it as they traverse this cursed, decaying world.”
Neva is expected to launch in 2024.
Granblue Fantasy Relink release frame trailer
Granblue Fantasy Relink finally has a release date! Almost. It’s narrowed down to winter 2023 at least, which is a pretty big development considering how often Cygames has had to delay the RPG. There’s also a gorgeous new trailer.
The Plucky Squire
The Plucky Squire blends 2D adventuring and 3D action as main character Jot and their friends leap into a world brimming with creativity – and fight to stop the grouchy wizard who’s bent on destroying it. It’s dripping with charm and comes from All Possible Futures, a studio co-founded by former Pokemon artist James Turner.
The Talos Principle 2
If you love a good puzzle and some philosophy on the side, then The Talos Principle 2 is probably for you. It’s billed as a “first-person puzzle adventure,” one that ruminates on themes of sentience, faith, reason, and knowledge as you travel through a futuristic world where humans no longer exist. The Talos Principle 2 is expected to release in 2024.
Alan Wake 2 release date
Alan Wake 2 is launching during scary season, and it’s bringing a second protagonist along for the ride. Check out our Alan Wake 2 recap for more details and the full trailer.
Revenant Hill announcement
Some of the creators of Night in the Woods are at it again, with Revenant Hill, an adventure set in the 1920s where you – Twigs, the cat – are on a mission to become a witch’s familiar. You’ll make friends and some enemies, help ghosts, and host parties for witches and spirits. Revenant Hill should launch sometime in 2024.
Foamstars announcement
What if Splatoon but with glitz, glamor, and soap suds instead? Is apparently what Square Enix asked themselves before deciding Foamstars was the answer. It’s impossible to see the action, where you cover an arena with colored suds, as anything other than a Splatoon-alike. Square Enix’s last live-service game didn’t go over so well, but we’ll see what happens in 2024 when Foamstars launches
Helldivers 2 trailer
Helldivers 2 puts you and some friends in the depths of space with some fancy gadgets, big weapons, and plenty of Fallout-style sass as you fight to keep SuperEarth safe from monsters and recover resources. The multiplayer game is set to launch later in 2023.
Final Fantasy 16 launch trailer
Final Fantasy 16 launches on June 22, 2023, but Square Enix went ahead and published the game’s launch trailer, an intense affair with action and angst. What we don’t have is the FF16 demo yet, though. Please Square Enix, we’re desperate.
Immortals of Aveum Trailer
EA is getting in on the first-person shooter action with Immortals of Aveum, which puts a fantasy twist on the genre. We’ll have plenty more to say about this one in the future, but for now, the trailer gives a good idea of what you can expect.
Ultros announcement
Ultros from Hadoque Games is a trippy indie Metroidvania that takes you on a psychedelic trip into a space demon’s coffin, because of course it does. This sarcophagus is hardly a place of rest. It’s full of monsters, puzzles, traps, and mysteries designed to destroy you. Death sends you into a time loop that helps you gradually reach the heart of the mysteries – and the coffin. Ultros will launch sometime in 2024.
Towers of Aghasba announcement
There’s a lot of building games out there, but Towers of Aghasba is aiming for something different. This lovely looking game drops you onto another planet, where you work to rebuild civilization and the environment in tandem. There’s a vast open world to explore, ancient wildlife to discover, cute little alien donkeys, and a giant talking turtle. You can even invite some friends over to check out your creations.
Towers of Aghasba will launch in 2024.
Concord announcement
Sony’s Firewalk studio is making Concord for PS5 and PC. What is Concord? Who can say, because it’s just a vague teaser trailer with an even vaguer release date. But at least we have a (very) tiny idea of what the team’s debut game is.
Bungie is reviving Marathon
Bungie is bringing back its old game Marathon in a very different form, and while Sony owns the Destiny maker now, this one is coming to Xbox and PC as well. Here’s how Bungie describes it:
“Marathon is a sci-fi PvP extraction shooter where players will embody cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners. Exploring a lost colony on the mysterious planet of Tau Ceti IV, Runners – working solo or as part of three-person crews – will fight for survival, for riches, and for fame.”
Expect more news in the future.
Teardown on PS5
If you like breaking stuff, then good news! Teardown is coming to PS5 later in 2023. The cult-classic game encourages you to destroy literally everything on screen in as inventive and chaotic a way as you can think of. We just hope it lets you break that giant PS5 too.
Assassin's Creed Mirage release date
Dragon's Dogma 2 trailer
Months after Capcom tormented us with a Dragon’s Dogma 2 logo and nothing more, we finally get to see some of the game in action. It looks absolutely brilliant, but there’s still no release date.
Metal Gear Solid 3 remake and Metal Gear collection
It’s a big year for Metal Gear. The long-rumored Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is real, with an unknown release date, and Konami is bundling the first three MGS games together in a brand-new collection as well. Our Metal Gear Solid 3 remake recap has more info.
Sony's Project Q PlayStation handheld
A new PlayStation handheld is coming, but it’s probably not what you were expecting. It’s called Project Q and it lets you play PS5 games away from your PS5 – but not too far away.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is coming to PS VR 2
In an unsurprising, but still appreciated move, Capcom announced Resident Evil 4 remake is coming to PS VR 2. Eventually.
And there you have it. There’s quite a bit coming to the PS5 (and other consoles) in the future, even though much of it is slated for a 2024 release date. Expect even more news in the coming months as Summer Game Fest gets underway.
