May bank holiday supermarket opening times for Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Lidl and more

The early May bank holiday is just around the corner and you'll be pleased to know most supermarkets will remain open this weekend.

The early May bank holiday is also known as May Day and this year it falls on Monday, May 1.

Because of this, most Brits get to enjoy a three-day weekend - but it also means supermarket opening times may change.

While many will have been well prepared for the long weekend, it’s handy to be aware of changes to store opening times should you need to embark on a last-minute supermarket run.

There are different rules for shops in Scotland and most supermarkets there will maintain their usual opening hours for the bank holiday Monday.

Here’s everything you need to know about when supermarkets are open and closed on Monday, May 1.

Tesco

Tesco stores will be open as normal over the weekend leading up to the May Day bank holiday on Monday.

Larger stores will be open between 6am and 7am and close between 10pm and midnight.

On Sunday, April 30, stores will only be open for six hours due to Sunday trading laws.

On May Day itself, the majority of Tesco's larger stores will be open from 8am to 6pm - some of its stores will be open a little later until 8pm.

All Tesco Express stores, which are its smaller convenience stores, will be open as normal from between 6am and 7am until between 10pm and midnight.

In Scotland, larger Tesco stores will be open from 8am until 8pm on bank holiday Monday.

Over the bank holiday weekend, opening times at Asda should remain unchanged on Saturday (April 29) and Sunday (April 30).

On Saturdays, the bigger Asda stores open at either 6am or 7am but close at around 10pm - this usually includes the stores open until midnight.

On Sunday May 30, most Asda superstores will open for only six hours from either 10am or 11am, until 4pm or 5pm.

On the bank holiday itself, the majority of Asda stores will be opening 8am to 8pm - some stores report that they are opening a little earlier at 7am.

Asda 24 hour sites will also be opening from 8am to 8pm.

Scottish Asda stores will open under their usual trading hours - opening between 6am and 7am until between 10pm and midnight.

In Scotland, stores are normally open 8am until 8pm.

On bank holiday Monday, the majority of Morrisons stores will be open from 7am until 8pm in England and Wales.
