Glenn Maxwell, Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy head the list of Australian luminaries who've been retained to play in the 2023 edition of English cricket's The Hundred competition.

Maxwell, who played four matches for the Lord's-based London Spirit men's team last year, was named on Thursday as one of half-a-dozen Australian players who've been brought back by their franchises.

Birmingham Phoenix's Perry, Northern Superchargers' Healy and Trent Rockets' Alana King, who are all in South Africa spearheading Australia's T20 World Cup challenge, will all feature again in the women's 100-ball-a-side event in August.

Staying on in England after their county stints, paceman Kane Richardson will have another spell with the Edgbaston-based Phoenix men's outfit while allrounder Daniel Sams will head back to Nottingham with the Rockets.

The 34-year-old Maxwell, having recovered from breaking his leg in a freak accident at a friend's birthday party late last year, is set to make up for lost time in the IPL and over a busy English summer.

After his spell in India in April and May, he'll play for the Birmingham Bears in the T20 Blast competition between May and July before returning to the Spirit in August.

He may be more famed for his exotic batting but Maxwell also had the best economy rate of any bowler in last year's second edition of The Hundred.

Richardson was also a big success with the Rockets, his tally of 13 wickets being surpassed by only three other bowlers.

There won't be so many Australian women taking part in The Hundred this year after a busy year featuring the launch of the WPL in India.

But Perry, who hit the jackpot when Royal Challengers Bangalore shelled out $297,000 for her in the WPL auction, will cash in again back at Edgbaston where she was top scorer for the Phoenix last year.

Australian vice-captain Healy, who was snapped up for a bargain $122,000 by UP Warriorz in the WPL, was also a success at Leeds with the Superchargers, while spinner King had the best economy rate of any bowler in the competition.

Other major names retained for the competition are England stars Jonny Bairstow, who'll be part of Australian Mike Hussey's Welsh Fire squad in Cardiff, Ben Stokes (Northern Superchargers) and Jofra Archer (Southern Brave).

India's Smriti Mandhana, the record buy at the WPL auction at $593,000, will feature for Southampton-based Brave.
