Maxwel Cornet, Craig Dawson, Alphonse Areola - Early West Ham team news ahead of Everton clash

West Ham United fell into the relegation zone for the first time in three-and-a-half months on Saturday after defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Daniel Podence’s second half goal sealed a 1-0 defeat for the Hammers at Molineux, with West Ham now 18th in the table and a point behind Bournemouth in 17th place.

Next on the calendar for the Hammers is a meeting with 19th-placed Everton, with David Moyes and Frank Lampard under pressure due to their side's poor form, with both managers in serious danger of losing their jobs if they suffer defeat. Ahead of Saturday’s London Stadium clash, here is a look at West Ham’s current list of absentees.

Maxwel Cornet (calf)

Having returned to training with the rest of the group at the end of November, winger Maxwel Cornet has suffered another setback on his return to action.

Having not featured since making his full Premier League debut for West Ham on October 1, has been out of action for over three months, with Moyes still unsure of when Cornet will return fully.

Ahead of losing at Wolves, Moyes said: "He’s in France, he’s getting rehabilitated there at the moment, he’s had his injections. I don’t know what else I can say, we’re just waiting on that. I don’t think he’s going to pop up tomorrow or next week at the moment, but he’s had injections to try and free up where he’s got a tightness in his calf.”

Alphonse Areola (hip)

Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has once again been the club’s cup competition goalkeeper this season, with all nine of his competitive starts coming outside of the Premier League. However, Areola missed the FA Cup trip to Brentford and Saturday’s loss at Wolves after suffering a hip injury in training

Moyes said after the win over Brentford on January 7 he did not even see the issue take place, but expects Areola to be okay.

“Areola was playing and [in] the last kick of yesterday (January 6) in training he just felt something at the top of his hip,” said Moyes . “I didn’t even see it happening, I thought we were finished but he got it in his last kick.”

Craig Dawson (uncertain future)

Centre-back Craig Dawson was left out of the West Ham squad at Molineux on Saturday, having been the subject of a transfer bid from Wolves.

Dawson is not currently injured or ill but a move to the west Midlands has been on the cards for some time, having almost joined Wolves in the summer.

Asked about Dawson’s future, Moyes remained tightlipped in Saturday’s defeat to Julien Lopetegui’s side. “I’ve got no comment to make on Craig Dawson,” Moyes told football.london following Saturday’s defeat.
