Max Wober feels 'freer' in Austria camp after 'tense' Leeds United spell

Leeds United defender Max Wober admits 'everything feels freer' now he is on international duty with Austria. The 25-year-old joined the Whites from RB Salzburg in January as then manager Jesse Marsch looked to strengthen the squad to avoid a relegation battle.

However, despite some solid displays from Wober, he was unable to stop Leeds' slide into the Championship, which was confirmed with a final-day defeat to Tottenham at Elland Road.

Wober was one of the few Leeds' defenders to escape serious criticism, and he has now linked up with the Austria national side ahead of their Euro qualifiers with Belgium on Saturday night and Sweden next Tuesday.

Being able to focus on something other than Leeds' plight is something Wober has enjoyed, and he admitted it all got a bit 'tense'.

“Everything feels freer,” he told Kicker. “It’s good for me to be able to concentrate on other things again. We just didn’t manage to get wins in the important games. Everything was tense in a way.”

In contrast to his club's fortunes, Austria are currently sitting top of their Euro qualification group after wins over Azerbaijan and Estonia, which came on the back of a morale-boosting friendly win against Italy. However, Wober is fully aware of the dangers Belgium post.

"We triggered a bit of euphoria again," he added. "They (Belgium) have top players in every position, but if you look at our squad, we definitely don't need to hide.

"They have great individual class, are dangerous when switching and have a lot of speed. You have to counteract that. The country is comparable to Austria in terms of population. Why shouldn't we be able to play our way into a similar world ranking position?"
