Max Verstappen shows ruthless streak as he rules out Sergio Perez favour in home GP

Max Verstappen insists he will be doing everything he can to win the Mexican Grand Prix this weekend - even if it costs Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez a maiden win on home soil.

Perez's third-placed finish last year was his best so far in Mexico City and he's bidding to go a couple of steps better in 2022 to delight the home crowd - and help in his bid to finish second in the driver standings.

He will move into the position behind runaway leader and back-to-back champion Verstappen if he betters the result of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

But Verstappen is in no mood for charity and wants to chalk up another race win at the home circuit of his teammate.

"Well, he knows what he has to do to finish second, he has to finish ahead of Charles," Verstappen said of Prerez. "As a team, we always try to be first and second and as a driver, I want to win more races.

"I still want to win the races, so I'm here to do the best I can. It's a bit more relaxing, but I know that once I sit in the car I always want the best."

The Dutchman was then pressed on what he would do if he is leading the race on the last lap with Perez second. "I'm winning," he said.

"He is anyway outscoring Charles [in that case], so that's all he needs. Let's see. Anyway, first we have to be that competitive. We don't know yet."

Verstappen will claim a slice of history should he win in Mexico, moving clear of Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher with a 15th race victory inside a single season.
