Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, is set to make his season debut for the Texas Rangers this Sunday against the Kansas City Royals. Scherzer had been sidelined since Game 3 of the World Series last fall due to a herniated disk in his lower back, which required offseason surgery. During his rehab this season, he also experienced right thumb soreness that was later diagnosed as a nerve issue extending to his right triceps.
The return of Scherzer for the Rangers coincides with their series against the Kansas City Royals, following a recent matchup against the New York Mets, the team that traded Scherzer to Texas last year. Despite turning 40 on July 27, Scherzer has been diligent in his recovery process, making three rehab starts for Triple-A Round Rock. His rehab outings included a game on April 24, followed by two more on June 9 and 15 after being sidelined by the nerve issue.
In his most recent rehab start, Scherzer showcased his pitching prowess by striking out eight batters in 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and three runs. He demonstrated good command by throwing 55 of his 79 pitches for strikes, indicating his readiness to return to the Major League level.
Since joining the Rangers last summer, Scherzer has been a valuable asset, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts before being sidelined by a muscle strain in his shoulder. Despite the setbacks, he managed to make two starts in the American League Championship Series and pitched in Game 3 of the World Series before exiting early due to his back issues.
With an impressive career resume, Scherzer ranks second among active pitchers in various categories, including 3,367 strikeouts, 214 wins, and 448 games started, trailing only Justin Verlander in each of these statistical areas. His return to the Rangers' rotation is eagerly anticipated by fans and teammates alike, as they look forward to his continued contributions on the mound.
