Max Lowe dubs Rangers vs Aberdeen rivalry his fiercest ever as Ibrox atmosphere blows him away

Max Lowe has revealed the rivalry between the Aberdeen and Rangers is the worst he has ever played in as the pair prepare to go head-to-head this weekend.

The former Dons defender also described the atmosphere at Ibrox as the best, while urging younger players from England to head north to improve their careers. Aberdeen welcome Michael Beale's Rangers side to Pittodrie on Sunday afternoon, knowing that a win against their fierce rivals will strengthen their position to secure third place in the league. Barry Robson's men are five points ahead of Hearts in fourth and six ahead of St Mirren going into the weekend fixtures.

Rangers on the other hand are 12 points behind Celtic at the top of the league and will be looking for a strong end to the season with the Scottish Cup semi-final coming up at the end of the month. Lowe, who is on the brink of promotion to the English Premier League with Sheffield United, said he hasn't experienced a rivalry like the one between the Dons and the Gers.

He told the Sheffield Star: “Everything up there, it made me become a man. It was my first time away from home and trust me, when you come up against Rangers and Celtic those games are massive. The one Aberdeen had with Rangers, that was the worst rivalry I’ve ever played in. I’ve not tasted our (the Sheffield) derby yet but I was still young when I went up there and, seriously, it’s something else.”

"Ibrox, that was the best place in terms of atmosphere. There were matches there where, genuinely, you couldn’t hear yourself speak to the guy who was right next to you."

Lowe also recalls when he agreed to sign for the Dons on loan from Derby County back in 2018.

He said: "I remember agreeing to go. And thinking it was a couple of hours away, not realising it was actually about eight. It was the first time of my life when I was on my own and having to fend totally for myself. It made me grow up fast and much more mature, responsible and serious about what I was doing. They live and breathe football in Scotland and, for anyone down here who isn’t playing or who wants to get their career kick started properly, I’d definitely recommend that they go up there and try it out."
