Max Johnston nears Sturm Graz transfer as Motherwell set to land six-figure windfall for rising star

Motherwell kid Max Johnston is on the verge of a move to Austrian outfit Sturm Graz.

The Scotland under 21 ace is out of contract at Fir Park and has a host of English clubs on his tail. Championship Stoke City were keen on landing the youngster but Sturm Graz has swooped in and have dangled the prospect of a four year deal – and see Well bank more than £300,000 in training compensation. Johnston was a sensation with the Steelmen in the second half of the season as he nailed down the right back berth under boss Stuart Kettlewell ahead of Scotland international Stephen O’Donnell. Motherwell chiefs had hoped to persuade the youngest to pen a new deal.

But increased interest in the defender saw him opt to assess his options over the summer. Johnston attracted plenty of heat but has hinted he was keen on taking his next steps abroad. Graz have stepped up with the Austrians looking to tool up for their bid to reach the Europa League group stages.
