Max George has shared more details about his heart condition after doctors identified the cause in a health update from his hospital bed on Sunday.
The Wanted singer revealed he is suffering from an atrioventricular block, a condition he announced would require him to spend Christmas in the hospital for heart surgery to fit a pacemaker.
An atrioventricular block occurs when electrical impulses in the heart are delayed or blocked from reaching the ventricles, disrupting normal heart function.
Speaking in the video, the 36-year-old shared: “I hope you are having a good night, spoke to the nurse earlier and good news is I get to have a scan earlier than I thought.
“So that’s really really good, and it’s called a 2:1 block, that’s what we know at the moment, going to try and find out the cause before determining how we treat it, whether a pacemaker, defibrillator, or something else.”
“So that’s where I am at, feeling ok tonight, city game didn’t help much”, he quipped after his beloved Manchester City lost to United.
The music star’s latest update comes shortly after he shared that he would undergo open-heart surgery to have a pacemaker fitted to regulate his heart rate.
A pacemaker is a small, battery-operated device designed to prevent the heart from beating too slowly. It is typically implanted during surgery under local anesthetic.
Following additional tests, doctors discovered an issue with the "bottom part of his heart”.
Pointing to his chest, he said: “So latest is that 100 per cent I'm going to have a little friend put in here at some point.
“Erm, I've got an issue with the bottom part of my heart, it's called a block. The tricky bit is what I have put in because until I have further tests we don't know what caused it.”
The Glad You Came singer admitted that the cause of his condition remains a "mystery," though doctors have ruled out some possibilities.
George, who has been sober for over four years, explained: "We’ve cancelled out a few things, like alcohol for example—I’ve not had a drink for four-and-a-half years, so it’s not that.
"It’s a bit of a mystery really, but that’s the hard bit. It’s the waiting. My heart rate is really, really low. They’re monitoring it 24/7, and everyone has been amazing.
“But the waiting bit is tough. It's just one of them things unfortunately. Whatever I get, I've got to get on with it. We're hoping pacemaker, a pacemaker is good.”
George rose to fame in the 2010s with The Wanted, who had a number of hit songs including All Time Low, Glad You Came and Heart Vacancy.
His bandmate Tom Parker died in 2022 at the age of 33 after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.
George, who helped carry Parker’s coffin at his funeral alongside fellow bandmates Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness and Nathan Sykes, previously said on This Morning that he continued to message his late bandmate following his death as it brought him “a bit of comfort”.
He also appeared in the US musical series Glee as Clint and in his band’s reality series The Wanted Life.
Over the years, he has competed in a number of competition series including Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, Bear Grylls: Mission Survive and Richard Osman’s House Of Games.
George’s girlfriend is former EastEnders star Maisie Smith, who appeared on BBC One dancing competition series Strictly Come Dancing in 2020 at the same time as George, though they have previously said that romantic sparks only began to fly in 2022.
He was due to appear on a MasterChef Christmas special before the BBC pulled the show from its festive schedule amid allegations about the conduct of judge Gregg Wallace across a range of shows.
