Max George has clapped back at a review of girlfriend Maisie Smith in her new show. The former EastEnders actress is starring opposite former Strictly Come Dancing professional Kevin Clifton in a new musical adaptation of Strictly Ballroom.
Maisie, who competed in the BBC One dance show in 2020 alongside now-boyfriend Max, has taken on the role of enthusiastic beginner Fran while Kevin plays the role of hero Scott Hastings in the reimaging of Baz Luhrmann's award-winning global film phenomenon.
The nationwide tour, which is being directed by Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood, kickstarted in Plymouth last month before moving on to the Bromley Church Theatre where a press night was held on Wednesday night (October 5).
The Wanted singer Max was in the crowd to support Maisie alongside Kevin's documentary-maker girlfriend Stacey Dooley and plenty of Strictly Come Dancing's professional dancers, both past and present. Taking to Instagram, Maisie shared several photos of herself on stage showing off her incredible dancing skills alongside Kevin.
One of the first to comment on the post was Max, 34, who praised her performance and revealed the adorable nickname he has for Maisie. "You're incredible princess," he wrote. Then he took to his own Instagram page to share videos of Maisie and Kevin in action. "That voice," he typed alongside the video.
But he also included a snapshot of a recent review which read: "Smith's sweet, soulful voice has character but occasionally lacks power." Sharing the video to prove them wrong, Max added: "Lacks power my a**e!!! @maisiesmithofficial you're INSANE!"
However, it didn't appear to bother Maisie who was sharing videos from the show posted by her former Strictly co-stars. Alijaz Skorjanec, who left Strictly this year, said: "What an amazing opening night of @strictlyballroomtouruk." Current pro Jowita Przystal said: "What a show!!!! Loved every second."
She went on: "Congratulations to all the team! Chicken, you're a superstar and of course one and only King Kev." The dancer, who is paired with Hamza Yassin in this year's series, could also be heard singing to the closing track, Love is in The Air leading to Maisie replying: "I've missed your singing girl."
Max's defence of Maisie comes after the pair put on a loved-up display for the Hello! Inspiration Awards in London on Tuesday (October 4). They turned up to the glam event in matching outfits and Maisie, 21, and Max looked closer than ever as they arrived at the lavish venue hand-in-hand and cuddled up to pose for photographs.
Maisie, who starred as Tiffany Butcher in EastEnders for more than 10 years, flaunted her incredible gym-honed figure in a skintight strapless cream jumpsuit which featured split-hem flared trousers. She completed the stunning look with a pair of cream quilted heels and added a simple silver necklace to let her luscious curled red locks do the talking. Max, meanwhile, sported a matching cream outfit, opting for a white vest under a blazer paired with matching baggy trousers and a pair of chunky lace-up trainers before he accessorised with a chain necklace.
