Mavericks Star Kyrie Irving Avoids Serious Injury on Dwight Powell Fall, per Report

Less than a day after losing Kyrie Irving to a foot injury, the Mavericks received some encouraging updates on the star guard’s health following his exit against the Trail Blazers.

Dallas learned Saturday that Irving, who left Friday’s win over Portland in the second quarter, avoided a serious injury after suffering what’s been described as “just a bruise,” according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

Irving’s injury was also later detailed in a report by The Athletic’s Shams Charania as a “heel contusion” that the 31-year-old will soon begin treatment to address.

The concern surrounding Irving began after the 13-year veteran, following a foul, watched from the floor as teammate Dwight Powell fell on his right leg. Irving initially attempted to walk the injury off, but he would leave the court after shooting his free throws and never return.

With Dallas now working through next steps, both reports stated the team has yet to determine a timeline for Irving's return to action, though MacMahon noted the Mavs are still waiting to determine his status for Monday’s game against the Grizzlies.

After missing four games due to injury this season, Irving will now look to avoid additional missed time after also dealing with soreness in the same foot.

On the season, Irving has played a key role alongside Luka Doncic in his second year with the club, averaging 23.0 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game for the Mavericks.
