Both Martin and Grimes have been in and out of the starting lineup throughout their careers. Martin started 24 games for the Sixers this season, while Grimes started 12 games for the Mavericks and showcased his shooting prowess by hitting a career-best 40% from beyond the arc.
This trade comes just days after the Mavericks made headlines with the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. The Mavericks had also acquired Klay Thompson in a sign-and-trade deal, aiming to strengthen their roster alongside Doncic and Kyrie Irving before the unexpected trade involving Doncic.
For Martin, the move to Dallas marks the third significant trade-deadline makeover for the Mavericks in the last four seasons. The team's previous trades brought in Irving from Brooklyn, leading to a successful run to the NBA Finals, where they ultimately fell to the Boston Celtics in five games.
While Martin had turned down a more lucrative offer from Miami to join the Sixers in pursuit of a championship with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George, Grimes had been a key contributor to the Mavericks' efforts in the Western Conference.
