Maurizio Sarri has resigned as Lazio coach and will be replaced by assistant Giovanni Martusciello, the Serie A club announced on Wednesday. The club confirmed that Sarri handed in his resignation as head coach of the first team, expressing gratitude for his achievements and work while wishing him success in his future endeavors.
Giovanni Martusciello has been appointed as the new head coach by Lazio. The decision comes after the 65-year-old Sarri submitted his resignation to the club's management on Tuesday, as reported by Italian media.
Lazio currently sits in ninth place in the Serie A standings with 40 points from 28 games. The team has faced a recent dip in form, losing five of their last six matches across all competitions, including a 2-1 home defeat against Udinese on Monday.
Maurizio Sarri took charge of Lazio in June 2021, succeeding Simone Inzaghi who departed to join Inter Milan. The club had dismissed earlier reports suggesting Sarri's potential sacking following their Champions League exit after a 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich. It was clarified that Sarri's contract was set to expire in 2025.
