Marcus Edwards has made quite the impression in Portugal since departing Tottenham in the summer of 2019.
Making a name for himself in the academy before Mauricio Pochettino handed him his senior bow against Gillingham in the EFL Cup in September 2016, the Enfield-born youngster was expected to play a big part in Spurs' future.
However, things didn't pan out for him in N17 and he headed to Vitoria de Guimaraes on a permanent deal after loan spells at Norwich City and Excelsior Rotterdam.
Catching the eye at Vitoria over the past few years, Edwards was on the move at the start of the week following a transfer to Portuguese giants Sporting CP.
Signing a four-year deal in the Portuguese capital, much will be expected of the 23-year-old after eight goals and four assists from his 24 games in all competitions in 2021/22.
Representing England as a youngster from U16 level up to the U20s, Edwards will no doubt have one eye on a future call-up to the senior side if he can keep up his current form and eventually hit the next level.
Former Arsenal youngster Stephy Mavididi, who currently plays for French side Montpellier, is one person who does believe that Southgate should be watching Edwards as he plots his future plans.
Mavididi, speaking in an interview with LiveScore, said: "Marcus Edwards. He is insane. Every time someone asks me about this guy, for me, he is one of the top three players I have played with.
"Dribbling, agility, low center of gravity, his change of direction. I haven’t seen anyone better than him with my own eyes. The guy is a joke, in the pockets and on the turn.
"He’s in Portugal right now. Last year I think he got seven or eight goals and a couple of assists, the year before that he was doing the same and this year he is also looking strong and on for the same numbers.
"He has proven that he can do it and play at a high level. I knew that already myself, but it is up to the world to see that."
Penning a deal until 2026 at Sporting CP, Edwards' contract also includes a buyout clause set at €60million.
"I'm very, very happy. It's a big day for me, my family and my friends. I'm just happy to be here. This is the biggest club in Portugal, so this is massive for me," he told the club's official website following his winter transfer.
"The club has a great manager, a good system, a good team and good players.
"I'm grateful that the coach, Rúben Amorim, believes so much in my qualities. Everyone knows what a good coach he is, so I'm excited to be able to work and develop with him."
