Mauricio Pochettino faces tough Chelsea reality after embarrassing Erling Haaland statistic

Chelsea's search for a new manager appears to have landed upon former Tottenham man Mauricio Pochettino ahead of the end of the season. The ex-PSG manager could succeed Graham Potter at Stamford Bridge, but has the task of picking up a squad that is performing far below par.

The Blues sit 12th in the Premier League, despite new owners Boehly-Clearlake spending roughly £600million in their two transfer window so far. Frank Lampard is in interim charge until the end of the campaign, but without a win since his return, the job will be setting things up for the next manager.

There will be a whole host of issues for them to solve once they are appointed, with the balance of the squad needing to be shifted in the transfer window. However, one of the other concerns will be over Chelsea's ability to score goals or perhaps their lack of them that is a worry.

Erling Haaland has laid this bare at Manchester City, having scored his 50th goal in all competitions on Sunday when he netted once again in the clash with Fulham. It was a penalty in the opening stages that took him to that tally, his seventh goal in the league from the spot.

That number of penalty goals is the same amount that Chelsea's top scorer in the league happens to have as actual goals, with Kai Havertz leading the way with seven goals of his own. It perhaps outlines the harsh reality that Pochettino may face when coming into the club.

Lampard addressed the side's poor form after defeat to Brentford, telling the media: "Is there a confidence issue? Yes. Are we dynamic enough in the final third? No. Have we been for a long time before I came here? No. Those things are not things that are going to turn overnight. We have to keep working."

It's that work that needs to continue going into the summer, whether a new system, the current players or a crop of new stars can change that, it remains to be seen.
